Changing of the Guard

August 30, 2013 by Nat & Tim 3 Comments

Fall is coming

It’s nearing the end of August and if you look closely you can already see some leaves changing colour. But this isn’t the only sign that Fall will soon be here.

In Ottawa, the last ceremony of the Changing of the Guard on Parliament Hill marks the end of summer and high season.

The Changing of the Guard is performed every day at 10 am from late June to the end of August. Dressed in their scarlet uniforms and bear skin headdresses, it isn’t uncommon to see a soldier fall unconscious from heat exhaustion during the heat waves of an Ottawa summer.  I had been meaning to take it in all summer and this was my last chance.

So it was that on August 24th I (Nat) found myself sitting on the steps of Parliament with my sister Jackie, not in protest but to witness this very special event.
