Top Ten Indian Street Foods

India is home to a wide variety of aromatic foods that are known throughout the world for being some of the most delicious. Whether you’re visiting India on business, to explore its rich history, or specifically for its delicious foods, the huge range of dishes available will have foodies rubbing their hands with glee, but for the sake of narrowing it down to the best of the best, here are the top ten street foods that you should plan to taste once you’ve booked your flights to India.

1. Chole Bhature
This delicious Punjabi street dish is commonly found in Delhi and often eaten as a type of breakfast pastry. It is made out of a combination of spicy chickpeas called chole and a fried bread called bhatoora, which is made of maida flour.

2. Vada Pao
More commonly found in Mumbai, Vada Pao consists of friend potato dumplings that are served in a bun alongside a variety of side such as red and green chutneys, as well as fried chilies.

3. Poha Jalebi
One of the best known and most cherished dishes of Indore, Poha Jalebi is made from pohas, potatoes, onions, green chilies and is seasoned with sugar, salt, turmeric and mustard seeds.

4. Litti Chokha
This traditional dish is eaten mainly in Bihar and Jharkhand, and is consumed for lunch or dinner. It is a bread dish that is stuffed with sattu and litti, and commonly eaten with mashed potatoes.

5. Kachori
A spicy snack that is commonly throughout many parts of India, kachori are balls of flower that are stuffed with moon dal and urad dal, and seasoned with black pepper, red chilli powder, salt, and a variety of other tasty spices.

6. Aloo Tikki
Think of Aloo Tikki as the Indian version of a potato croquette. Hailing from the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh this popular snack food is made with boiled potatoes, onions, cumin, chilli, corriander and ginger and will often be served with a cooling yoghurt dip.

7. Dabeli
Another sandwich type food found this time in the Kutch region, dabeli is a popular snack made from boiled potatoes seasoned with dabeli spices and smothered between two pieces of pav.

8. Akki rott
This spicy bread is made from rice flour and coconut chutney and comes from the region of Bangalore which is also famed for its wide variety of delicious dosas.

9. Idli Sambhar
Eaten most commonly as a breakfast dish in the southern region of Chennai, Tamil Nadu, it is served with a combination of chutney and sambar made from tamarind and pigeon peas.

10. Panipuri
Panipuri is found in Goa and consists of a round, hollow puri, fried and filled with tamarind chutney, chilli, chaat masala, potato, onion and chickpeas.
