La Vita è Bella – an Umbrian pictorial

December 5, 2014 by Nat & Tim 14 Comments

 Life in Umbria

I was planning on doing a pictorial of beautiful Umbrian landscapes and architecture and it ended up being photos of people. Tim has always challenged me to take more photos of people. For years I took nothing but photos without people. Standing in one spot waiting for a clear, people free shot. More than once I was actually able to make a photo of an empty New York City subway car. Now, more and more, I look for interesting people shots. You have to have the camera ready because most of these scenes are fleeting.

My favourite in this series is the first one. An evening spent with the home owners where we’re house sitting. A town festival celebrating wine and olive oil in Ficulle. There are so many things happening in this shot, I could stare at it for hours imagining these people’s stories.

Interesting photos. Too bad there aren’t too many smiles.

The one of the nurses crossing the street is my fav.

I’ve always wanted to go to Umbria, but still haven’t made it there. I hope they’re smiling when I come.

It’s our first time here and we love it so far. Winter is a great time to be here, no crowds. We were actually alone in the Duomo in Orvieto which is amazing

Love your photos! My husband says that I always take photos of people while he opts for places. They are both great ways to record memories. I’ll be interested to read more about Umbria.

The first photo is something very special, as you said there is so much going on and, being a huge people watcher, I can easily start to imagine those people’s lives and make little stories in my head about them. I also really like the pumpkin lady weighing Tim’s purchase, such a great shot too 🙂

The funny thing is that Tim took that photo and it’s my favourite too.

Yes, there’s lots going on in the first photo! It works very well in black and white :-). The volunteer nurses look like nuns…

The photos are beautiful! My favorite one is the nun looking over the staircase, I’m wondering what’s down there…..Do you ever need anyone to carry your suitcases? 🙂

Haha, I think she was looking at the rest of the group she was with. I wish I had the money for a suitcase carrier 😉
